7 travel startups in Boston changing the way we travel

Whether they’re harnessing big data to help travelers find the cheapest flights, or providing tools for people to research and plan a vacation, Greater Boston startups are changing the way we travel. Here are seven we think you should know about.

What they do: FareHarbor is a comprehensive online booking software that allows businesses in the tour, rental and activity industry to grow and manage their online reservations. The founders of FareHarbor crafted their platform from experience working side by side with a catamaran charter company in Oahu’s, Haleiwa Harbor.

What they do: TripAdvisor is a massive free travel guide and research website that provides reviews of travel-related content and features interactive travel forums. TripAdvisor also offers a personalization tool that helps users save hotel, restaurant, and attraction reviews so you can remember what you did or didn’t like.

What they do: Lola provides real, human travel agents on-demand through a smartphone app. The company researches vacations, books flights and hotels, and anything else you may need for your trip. 

Where they’re located: Boston, MA

Founded: 2015

 

What they do: Freebird is a mobile rebooking tool that lets travelers skip the line and instantly book a new ticket on any airline at no additional cost in the event of a flight cancellation, four-hour delay, or missed connection. Freebird notifies travelers in the event of a flight disruption, and offers the chance to rebook in less than 30 seconds with a few taps on their mobile device.

What they do: Hopper is an app that uses big data to predict and analyze airfare so travelers have the info they need to get the best deals on flights. Hopper also notifies them when prices for their flights are predicted at their lowest points.

Buggl Boston Travel

What they do: Buggl lets you design, find, and distribute travel guides. Users can browse travel guides published by leading travel bloggers or just regular people for over 100 countries.

Where they’re located: Boston, MA

Founded: 2012

 

What they do: Wanderu provides bus, train and city travel guides, in addition to details of any routes you may need on your U.S. trips. Travelers can book train or inner-city bus tours all over the country.
